This book is a novel about a retired British doctor who is an amateur scholar on Gustave Flaubert. In fact, one learns a lot about the author of Madame Bovary by reading it. At times funny, always informed, this novel is a triumph. The book's author, Julian Barnes, is francophile Englishman many of whose books are set in or inspired by France.
